Mrs. BC (called ML for "My Landlady" here) is 68 and very young at heart. She does a lot of volunteer work with her church (Catholic) now that she's retired, not only teaching catechism classes on Saturday mornings, but also serving as the equivalent of a deacon.
ML is very devout, as is her mother who is still alive at 89 years, and her faith has seen her through some tough times. It has also helped her become even more thoughtful and kind than she was as a young girl, growing up in Guyana with 9 siblings, a hard-working mother, and a father who tended to like alcohol too much.
In addition, ML also works at a dance studio from 3 to 8 pm on Monday through Thursday as well as a few hours on Saturday afternoon. She loves the children at the dance studio, and they love her. The older students (mostly girls, although a few boys in their teens are learning gymnastics there) teach her all the latest dance moves. And she can boogie! I wish I could say that I had that same sense of rhythm!
Among ML's many talents are cooking, beadwork, gardening, and Scrabble playing. Her daughter, SK, is a talented artist, and they used to have a booth in Fredericksted where they would sell their arts and crafts when the cruise ships came in. Unfortunately, it's been around three years since any of the big ships have anchored on STX, which has affected everyone's pocketbooks tremendously.
Sadly, ML lost her husband (and the love of her life) 3 years ago to prostate cancer. He was about 20 years older than she and her second husband. Not only did he love her with all his heart, he also helped her along in her career. Both of them were with the police in Guyana, and they served with security forces here on STX when they migrated here some time ago.
